Wilfred Owen was a British poet and soldier, who used to write war poems. The IB mission statement, claims that they want to make caring young individuals that will make the world a better place. Wilfred Owen wrote poems about war and those poems really did question war. It is very successful in getting people to reconsider violence as an option. People realize the importance of negotiating and solving problems rather than fighting. After all, IB is here to make the world a better place.
When you read one of Wilfred Owen's poems, you really do start to question war. Is this the best way to solve an argument? Is it fair that all those lives are gone, all because of other people fighting? Isn't there a better to solve this? In his poem "Anthem for Doomed Youth", it talks about all the innocent children were killed because adults were busy fighting each other. Do you really think that the children deserved that? You can already see that it gets people to look at war from a different perspective.
By questioning war, it really gets students to think about war as even an option. One question unsolved, will lead to other another question and if those aren't solved, then you will just keep on looking until you find an answer. Students have known war as a fight to the death, just to settle someone's arguments when they couldn't cooperate anymore. When they read poems like: "Asleep", where a soldier's work was done for the day and before you know it, a bullet killed him. Is war really the best option in the situation, including the price we have to pay for? It gets them to think differently Hopefully, this will show them that violence should never be an option.
By this time, they should have recognized the importance of solving problems using the best solutions. They shouldn't leave problems unsolved. That could create bigger problems. Usually, the same thing happened to the countries fighting in a war. The little problems they didn't solve at first got into bigger problems and soon enough a war had began. This will also help them with their health and social education. That could keep them out of problems. Wither it is a small issue at home or bit bigger one at school, that can grow to become tougher problems to solve in the future. Eventually, they will grow up and be part of the real world, faced with real life problems. It is important that they see using the best possible solution will help them out. By reading about war, that might influence them to actually solve problems with the best solutions.
Wilfred Owen's poems can easily the capture the scene of war. IB is trying to bring peace to this world. His poems show us how cruel humans can be to each other. This makes the reader really question violence and wither it should even be an option. Can we solve it in another way? Students reading and analyzing his poetry will hopefully be able to understand the importance of negotiating and solving problems before they become bigger problems. It could even be the problems they face every day. When the same students in the future take are in the real world, the can even be the ones to prevent war in the future. After all, they are the people of tomorrow.
